Forests are necessary for us to live. Forests provide us with oxygen, shelter, jobs, nourishment, and fuel, as well as a place to recreate while contributing to our spiritual, emotional well-being.
More than 1.6 billion people of the world live near forests. In Canada 23 million people, (approximately two thirds of Canada’s population) live in or near forests.
700,000 people live in forest industry reliant communities in Canada.
Forests influence climates through various physical and chemical processes. Trees release water vapor through pores in their leaves — a process called evapotranspiration — and, like human sweating, this cools the trees and their surroundings.
