What is a Biosphere?
The Encyclopedia Britannica provides us with a scientific definition of a Biosphere:
A Biosphere is a relatively thin life-supporting stratum of Earth’s surface, extending from a few kilometers into the atmosphere to the deep-sea vents of the ocean. The biosphere is a global ecosystem composed of living organisms (biota) and the abiotic (nonliving) factors from which they derive energy and nutrients.

What is a Biosphere Reserve?
In the early 1970s, the United Nations established a project called Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), which promotes sustainable development. A network of biosphere reserves exists to establish a working, balanced relationship between people and the natural world.
UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB). MAB is an Intergovernmental Program that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.

The Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere
Biosphere regions form a world network for promoting an exchange of information, experience, and personnel. There are approximately 669 BR sites in 120 countries. Eighteen of those are in Canada! One of those 18 Canadian Biosphere Reserves is the Bras d’Or Lakes Biosphere on Cape Breton Island (Unama’ki).
